ABOUT US
ABOUT US
Backcountry Flight Training provides advanced flight instruction in the Southern Maine/New Hampshire area. Based out of Eliot Maine, training takes place on various public and private grass runways throughout the seacoast area and into the scenic White Mountains of New Hampshire. Training is available via set course packages or by the hour, depending on the student's needs and current skill/comfort level.
Training is primarily done in the student's aircraft as this will provide the most benefit. Our focus is generally on Cessnas equipped for backcountry travel (larger tires, etc) and Supercubs/Carbon cubs. The landing strips used in training will be chosen based on aircraft and pilot performance. There is plenty of grass out there for even stock Cessna 150s and plenty of fun spots for high performance Carbon Cubs and everything in between.
INSTRUCTION TOPICS
INSTRUCTION TOPICS
Backcountry Flight Training offers several courses, from Intro to Mountain Flying, suitable for all aircraft types and pilot skill levels (even small tire nosewheels) to our advanced 5 day Full Backcountry Proficiency course designed for slow flying, big tire aircraft types that requires some previous experience. Backcountry flying is not a "one and done" type of learning experience. We focus on giving you the skills and background you need to then go practice these fundamentals on your own, safely.

The best place for fuel is probably Skyhaven Airport, Rochester NH. Skyhaven (KDAW) is a 6 minute flight. Very easy in and out with typically decent fuel prices and 24hr self service.
We are a 1 hour drive from Boston Logan Airport. An Uber/Lyft from the airport is generally around $80-100 and is an easy ride straight up the highway. There is also the C&J bus into Portsmouth NH which has a reliable schedule, comfortable and clean buses, and is fairly inexpensive.
